Welcome to Flint Hills
Gelbvieh-Red Angus
In 1981 Flint Hills Gelbvieh-Red Angus recognized the value of
Gelbvieh cross calves out of our first Gelbvieh bull
BBW Wilson 27L.
We had purchased him at the Kansas Beef Expo from a
well-known breeder, Jim Wilson at Mankato, Kansas.
We had studied the advantages of Gelbvieh as shown by the
USDA-MARC research done at Clay Center, Nebraska.
Namely, increased weaning weights, (rapid early growth) early
puberty, excellent breed back, and generally excellent maternal
traits.
Our breeding program since 1981 has been geared toward the
production of quality, moderate, easy fleshing bulls and females for
the commercial producer.
Our cattle are moderate framed (5 – 7) good disposition,
polled and mostly black.
Our average birth weight on 2007-2008 calves was 82# with the
spring born bulls adjusting over 700 # on a 205 day basis.
Our spring cows survive on Flint Hills grass and a few cubes
and hay as needed.
Through the use of AI, from the beginning, we have been able to use the best genetics in the land, of which we use only proven AI bulls. When a select few older cows have proven themselves, they are flushed to keep the best genetics in our herd on the female side.
In
1994, Flint Hills Gelbvieh-Red Angus realized we needed to add
another breed so that we could supply our customers with the
genetics for a total cross-breeding program.
We purchased a select group of Red Angus cows and started
producing 1A Red Angus and later Red Angus X Gelbvieh Balancers.
In 2005 we purchased our first Black Angus bull to produce
homozygous black Balancers.
When the latest USDA-MARC research was released which showed that exotic cattle yield well but needed to improve marbling ability, we decided to concentrate our breeding efforts on carcass quality. Our current marbling EPD on all our females is .05. The Gelbvieh breed average is -.03. Likewise our two herdsires sired by the leading AI Sires, (Carolina Fortune and Visa) have an EPD of .06. The Gelbvieh Sire average is -.04. In addition our other carcass traits are well above breed average.
In
summary, when you buy Flint Hill Gelbvieh-Red Angus breeding stock,
you are buying a moderate framed, good disposition animal that will
yield and grade above average.
The females for replacements should be easy fleshing and good
breeders.
